Monochrome Madness and Motion (The hill of Tara)

Follow me up to Carlow ( a rebel song)

“see all the children of the Gael beneath O’Byrnes banner”

“The connection to place, to the land, the wind, the sun, stars, the moon… it sounds romantic, but it’s true – the visceral experience of motion, of moving through time”

For Leanne Coles’ Monochrome Madness 3-16

a tribute to my Irish history

I caught this image of a young girl running up the hill toward the memorial stone marking the graves of the patriots who fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1798.  Sadly many of those who died for Ireland did so by hangman or in front of English firing squads. The reverent stillness of the stone, with the child running struck a poignant chord with me.

“The United Irishmen, a republican revolutionary group influenced by the ideas of the American and French revolutions, were the main organizing force behind the rebellion, led by Presbyterians angry at being shut out of power by the Anglican establishment and joined by Catholics, who made up the majority of the population. A French army which landed in County Mayo in support of the rebels was overwhelmed by British and loyalist forces. The uprising was suppressed by British Crown forces with a death toll of between 10,000 and 30,000.”

  5. As a child, I used to obsess about living on a spinning globe and us all rushing around it, forever in motion, while the globe itself seemed stationary beneath us. Or sitting as a passenger in a car, watching the scenery whizzing by, when when it was the car doing the whizzing. Your wonderful pictures, Cybele, reminded me of those feelings.

    1. oh boy Adrian, it’s quite a history! and I love all of Great Britain. But being Scots and Irish I find the history very tragic, bearing in mind from the English point of view that Scotland and those wild highlanders were a thorn in their side over the centuries. The Brits were no worse than any other nation with power. It’s a sad testament to mankind’s greed throughout history. Although here in Canada, we are a bit like Switzerland on the international scene we were terrible bullies toward the aboriginal peoples whom we abused and pushed off their land as well when this country was growing. Now we are making reparations to them.
I did another post on the battle of Culloden which now of course, since that series Outlander came out, more people know about. It’s very poignant. I was over there during the referendum which was very interesting. The highlands still were more for independence! When the Bank of Scotland threatened to leave that might have been a deciding factor(you think!?) but it was close, and I saw that the Scottish economy was booming there with off shore oil etc.
Here is a link to my post re: Culloden.
I hope it didn’t contain too many errors. it’s a very touching experience to visit there when you have family who lived in that area.

I think your words “It’s a sad testament to mankind’s greed throughout history” say it all, Cybele. As I get older I despair at man’s ongoing inhumanity to man, and really can’t see any end to it. And knowing that I cannot do anything about it, I try not to think about it. Escapism? Avoiding the issue? Probably, but I can see no point in wilfully depressing my spirits. But it is sad, sad, sad. Its very good to talk to you about this. A

Great examples of movement. The first photo has an ominous feel to it like something evil might be chasing the girl. Maybe I just have seen one too many scary movies. 😉 Great capture.
