Springtime at last in Victoria – Hatley Gardens

A beautiful early evening at Royal Roads  in Colwood –  Hades has at last freed Persephone from his winter cave and Demeter rejoices.  Here are a few scenes in that enchanting garden.

  1. Does anyone live in that castle? It looks like a splendidly comfy castle compared to some of our drafty and rather spartan ones in the UK that are steeped in all sorts of bloody history and political intrigue.
I’d love to teleport into that garden. It’s beautiful and spacious.

    1. Sarah it was turned into a university!! When I was young it was also a military academy but originally one of the Dunsmuir granddaughters, Dola lived there. Apparently she and Talulah Bankhead used to party it up there. She sadly died of cirrhosis and was I believe the last of the well known Coal barons the Dunsmuir family of Victoria. The gardens are exquisitely beautiful and open to the public.

It could almost be an English stately home and grounds Cybele – and that music has an Old English ‘feel’ as well as the Celtic instruments. Lovely post.

Nice gardens. If Hades lives there, I should join him without fear. There is a poem by Algernon Charles Swinburne called The Garden of Persephone. I like it for those “other” imageries of mine.

Is winter and spring analogous to death and rebirth? Just thinking.

      1. Indeed!! Persephone is held for six months underground by her lover the king of that underworld Hades ( or the Roman Pluto). He lets her go visit her mother ( Demeter or Ceres who is goddess of earth) for 6 months. So while she is gone Demeter is sad and everything dies etc and when she comes back Demeter is happy and renews the earth for spring and summer) Don’t you just love all those myths!! They are quite delightful and often scary too!!

    2. yes, lol!! But poor old Hades stays underground. So happy to see Spring this year as we had a long wet winter!!

      1. It’s been an odd winter for us! A few snow flurries but nothing exciting. The north of the UK had a bit more but it’s generally been a mild but boring winter weather wise. Not great for photography!
